The Istanbul Europa Race, in the prestigious IMOCA class, is the latest great sailing race in the yachting calendar. Its long course through Europe is to make it a major sporting event from its very first edition.

The Istanbul Europa Race, in the prestigious IMOCA class, is the latest great sailing race in the yachting calendar. Its long course through Europe is to make it a major sporting event from its very first edition. In the great tradition of stage races, the Istanbul Europa Race will bring together a fleet comprised of some of very best sailors of our time, taking them on an ideal course and offering a genuine invitation to travel.

A human, competitive and cultural adventure, the Istanbul Europa Race has a wealth of assets to bring to the table. A public, comprising amateur sailors and enthusiasts alike, is bound to come out in force to view the spectacle, to witness this new encounter between man and the natural elements, at the forefront of which are the waters of the Mediterranean, as well as the

Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel. The excellent line-up of sailors offered, the original aspect of the race ports and the course together with the public presence, all go to ensure massive, international media coverage, given the infatuation that is prompted by sailing.

The Istanbul Europa Race is a unique international project, managed by the Olay Nautic company. Well known around the sailing world and appreciated for its skills as an organiser, Olay Nautic already manages the Cap Istanbul.

The class IMOCA
The Istanbul Europa Race will be contended in the IMOCA class, an association of open 60 foot monohulls (Open 60′ class).

The International Monohull Open Class Association was founded in 1991; it is a member of ISAF (International Sailing Federation) in the offshore racing yacht class and groups together the greatest races, including the Vendée Globe, the Barcelona World Race, the Route du Rhum as well as the Transat Jacques Vabre.

In general the boats carry excessive sail area, they are light and most commonly made of carbon. Able to reach speeds in excess of 30 knots, the monohulls run before the wind, with a hi-tech structure guaranteeing them both speed and endurance, even in the most extreme conditions the sea can throw at them.

An invitation to travel
The fleet will set off from the “gateway to Europe”, the Eurasian Istanbul; a town straddling the sea, a bridge between two continents, and future European Capital of Culture.

The initial stage in the Mediterranean journey will lead the fleet to Nice; the pearl of the Côte d’Azur.

At the end of a short but magical stage, taking the sailors via the le de Beauté, Barcelona will play host to the competitors. The dynamic Catalan capital is one of the most attractive and most welcoming towns, renowned around the sailing world.

Finally, the unmissable Brest in France will have the honour of playing host to the fleet, where its splendid site will witness the ‘grande finale’ and the crowning of the champion, after over four weeks of battling and challenges.

Golf is not a very popular sport in Turkey but lately it’s growing amongst over mid-class people. Like in many European countries, also in Turkey usually whealty individuals play golf, therefore it’s seen as a sport for the rich.

Despite it’s huge population and having one of the oldest golf clubs of Europe, Istanbul has only 3 main golf clubs. One of them has 9-hole course, other two have 18-holes. All of them are members of the Turkish Golf Association and organize national and international tournaments.

Istanbul Golf Club:
Istanbul Golf Club is the oldest golf club of Turkey and the 4th oldest in Europe. It has 9-holes course and is popular for the local people and resident foreigners due to its closeness to many of the larger residential areas allowing golfers to play both at lunchtime and evening, it’s located between Yeni Levent and Maslak neighborhoods. The par 65 course holds many clubs and open tournaments and has a very active social section. It has a cozy clubhouse. Golf lessons are also possible.
www.igk.org.tr

Kemer Golf & Country Club:
The Kemer golf club is 30 minutes from the city center, in Kemerburgaz neighborhood near the Belgrade Forest. This 18-hole par 73 championship golf course has been designed in USGA standards taking in all the beauty of the forestry area. The clubhouse and its facilities are excellent. Private golf lessons are also possible. The course is part of a private club but non-members are also welcomed to play for a green fee.
www.kg-cc.com

Klassis Golf & Country Club:

Eurasia Marathon is the result of hope and enthusiastic expectations for athletics. At the beginning, the main intention was simply to organise a marathon event. Being a unique city in terms of history and geography, Istanbul deserved a unique marathon. Despite the financial and logistical problems, an initial project was set up for the Eurasia Marathon.

In 1978, the officials were informed that a group of German tourists would visit Istanbul the next year, who run marathons in the countries they visited, the Nile Marathon in Egypt being the most recent race they participated. It was then decided to realise the Eurasia Marathon project.

Having solved the problems with the course and the traffic, the organisers invited the elite Turkish athletes to the event as well. Finally, all preparations were completed and the marathoners whom 34 of them were from the 74-person tourist group gathered at the starting point, 700 meters behind the Bosphorous Bridge on that historical day. Thus, the Bosphorous Bridge witnessed a marathon for the first time in its history, which the runners crossed from Asia to Europe. That was the beginning of an important event. The first Eurasia Marathon was won by Hasan SAYLAN, a Turkish athlete from the city of Zonguldak, in a time of 2:35:39.

Being organized for 30 years, one of the most important features of the Eurasia Marathon is that it aims friendship and peace since day one. The race course changed three times over the years, therefore winning times vary in those periods. Well known athletes such as Ian Thompson and Terry Mitchell participated in the Eurasia Marathon, which also became a testing ground for Turkish athletes, many of whom went on to run at international races.
Date and Time

The Marathon and the 15Km starts together at 09:00am on Sunday, 18th October 2009.

Entry Deadline
Registration is possible until 23:45 GMT on 1st October 2009.

You can swim between two continents, from Asia to Europe. The Turkish Olympic Committee is organizing a swimming event on the Bosporus in Istanbul July. This will not be an easy ride, because the Bosporus’s currents and strength will make the 6.5 km long journey a big challenge.
